Artist Bio

Nathan Hui is a photographer from St. George, Utah. He grew up in an Asian household that owned a local restaurant and has worked with his parents since he was a teenager. In Asian cultures, it is common for many families to believe that their child should be focused on the medical field or engineering, but for Nathan, that wasn’t the lifestyle that he wanted to pursue. He wanted to find something that he was passionate about and wanted to break the typical stereotype and broaden his interests, and that is when he found his enjoyment in photography.

Nathan specializes in automotive photography and has always been very fond of cars. When he was younger, his father and brother were car enthusiasts and that was bound to rub off onto him. Nathan began taking pictures of vehicles when he was out of high school, gradually practicing on his personal vehicle to understand how to correctly compose his pictures, and eventually started to take pictures of other people's cars. To Nathan, cars are more than just a way to get from point A to point B, they are an extension of people’s personalities and characteristics. People put their blood, sweat, and tears into their vehicles in order for them to feel accomplished and satisfied with the result that they have created, similar to art. Being a car enthusiast himself, he understands the dedication and effort that is consumed by working on cars, and he chooses to capture everything in one picture.

There is a whole world out there within the car community that is created from diversity. Race, age, gender, etc, people of all shapes and sizes are brought together by something that they all have in common. Someone can take the very same vehicle and create it to be something completely different than someone else’s, and that is the wonder of working on cars. People are able to create their own version of something else and make it their own, and with Nathan’s photography, he is able to allow those people to share those versions of themselves through photos and their cars.
